When the Delta variant (B.1.167.2) spread in southeast China, doctors found that the symptoms were different and more dangerous than when the original strain spread in Wuhan in late 2019.
The announcement was made by experts on National Television on June 10 and June 11.
Mr. Guan Xiangdong, director of the intensive care department at Sun Yat-sen University in Guangzhou city, the center of the outbreak, said up to 12% of patients became seriously ill or critically ill within three to four days.
Doctors in the UK and Brazil have also reported similar conditions related to the variants in those two countries, but their severity has not been confirmed.
The report from China is the latest evidence of the dangers posed by Delta.

Meanwhile, the two variants Beta and Gamma, first discovered in South Africa and Brazil, showed little or no evidence of causing unusual clinical signs, according to research last month.
The spread of Delta in southeast China raises questions about the effectiveness of domestic vaccines.
As some other parts of the world struggle to acquire and deploy large quantities of Covid-19 testing kits, southeast China has taken advantage of the local chemical manufacturing industry to support testing.
Guangzhou has also quarantined tens of thousands of residents who have been near sick people.
