7 hours of secret meeting between Mexican drug lord and Hollywood actor 0
Hollywood actor Sean Penn (left) during a meeting with drug lord Joaquin Guzman.
Guzman was arrested on January 8 after a raid by soldiers of the Mexican marine force on his hideout in the coastal city of Los Mochis, Sinaloa state.
As a notorious criminal, most wanted in the world by both the US and Mexican authorities, Guzman was still able to hold a secret meeting with Hollywood actor Sean Penn.
Sean Penn, 56 years old, is an American actor and film director.
According to the Washington Post, throughout the time he spoke with Penn, Guzman continuously boasted about his power in the drug trafficking underworld.
`I supply more heroin, meth, cocaine and marijuana than anyone else in the world,` Guzman said.
AP quoted a Mexican law enforcement official as saying that it was Penn’s meeting with Guzman that helped authorities track down his location in Durango last October.
According to Penn, to meet Guzman, he went through a difficult process.
The conversation between Penn and Guzman revealed many new details about the prison escape through the tunnel under Altiplano prison, Mexico, that the drug lord carried out 6 months ago.
Guzman asked Penn if Americans were amused by stories about him.
Guzman, who once described himself as a down-to-earth farmer, spoke of his empire calmly and unflinchingly.
In Guzman’s birthplace, a high mountainous region in Sinaloa state, `the only way to have money to buy food and survive is to grow poppies and marijuana,` the drug lord said.
`Drugs are truly a poison that destroys people. However, as I said, in the place where I was born, there was no other way to survive, to work for a living in that economy was impossible.
Guzman also revealed that he used to use drugs but had not touched them for 20 years.
Even though the Sinaloa cartel led by Guzman has had a series of bloody clashes and purges with many other gangs as well as opposing the government, he still describes himself as not a person who likes violence.
`Look, all I did was self-defense, nothing more,` Guzman said.
Penn met Guzman in early October, shortly before Mexican authorities launched an operation to arrest him at a ranch in the town of Pueblo Nuevo, Durango.
Meanwhile, Guzman wrote to Penn that eight helicopters chased him and `the marines appeared all over the farms. Many families had to flee, leaving their homes behind for fear of being killed.`
However, a senior Mexican official said that Guzman’s interview with actor Penn was intended as `propaganda`, contributing to enriching exaggerated myths about the drug lord.
`Nothing that appeared in the interview can change the fact that Guzman is a criminal who killed many people and smuggled drugs that led to the deaths of many people,` the official emphasized.
