In a phone call with US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin on April 20, Chinese Defense Minister Senior Lieutenant General Wei Fenghe affirmed that the country considers the island of Taiwan `an inseparable part of China`.
General Wei declared that the Chinese military `will resolutely protect national security, sovereignty and territorial integrity`, and warned his US counterpart that `the relationship between the two countries will be destroyed if not handled properly.`
This is the first phone call between the two countries’ defense ministers since US President Joe Biden took office more than a year ago.
General Wei and Mr. Austin discussed US-China defense relations, regional security issues and Russia’s special military campaign in Ukraine.

Previously, the US and Western countries supporting Ukraine expressed disagreement when China refused to condemn Russia’s military campaign, and warned that Beijing could face consequences if it helped Moscow avoid sanctions.
General Wei said the US and China need to respect each other, live peacefully and avoid confrontation.
`The two militaries need to strengthen mutual military trust, increase dialogue and exchanges, control risks and crises, and develop practical cooperation to ensure normal and stable development.`

The phone call took place after several US politicians reaffirmed their support for the island of Taiwan.
China has always considered Taiwan a province awaiting reunification and declared its readiness to use force if necessary.
A delegation of US lawmakers last week visited the island of Taiwan for two days.
